Beats in a bar

Ready-made speeds

Finding a song's speed: Play the song and press Tap along with the beat, four or five times. It works out how fast you are tapping. Fumble one and it throws that tap away rather than letting it drag the answer about.
Beats in a bar: Most music counts in fours. Waltzes count in threes — ONE two three, ONE two three. The first beat is played a little louder, which is what makes a bar feel like a bar.
Starting slow: The oldest advice in music and still the best: if you cannot play it slowly, you cannot play it. Set it slower than feels comfortable, get it right every time, then nudge it up a couple of beats.
Why it does not drift: A repeating timer in a browser is not exact, and the errors add up rather than cancel out — after a minute you would be noticeably out. So every beat is worked out as an exact time from the moment you pressed Start, and each click is handed to the sound card slightly early with an instruction for precisely when to play it.
Keyboard: Space starts and stops, T taps, and the up and down arrows change the speed one beat at a time.
